People behind the book
Mary Simons
Mary lecturers in political science.
Her research interests are gender politics; third world comparative politics
and development issues. Although she works mainly at the University
of Cape Town, she has been a visiting professor in Canada and in the USA.
But that's not the Mary I know.
The one I know talks to walls - at least that what it seemed like
when I had my weekly 'sessions' with her. I would explain the germ
of a concept that I had for the books, or a problem I had with choosing
the right word or terminology, and Mary would look to the wall behind me
and reply, "What they are saying is..." Or she would say, "No.
They say the right word to use is..."
Does that make any sense to you?
Guess not. Who cares! It helped me a lot by clarifying my
thoughts and pushing me to think deeper and braver and even more
out-of-the-box. Let's call it thinking-beyond-the-walls.
I suppose, at the time she was like a
spiritual coach to me. She gave me 'spiritual confidence', the
confidence to believe that the thoughts and 'messages' I was 'getting'
were important enough to write down. And to publish.
And now, if you sneak into my study,
you can catch me talking to the walls.
